The Research & Development Group is involved in medical device research and development - both self-initiated and collaborative.  Research collaborations include Flinders Medical Centre clinical departments, Flinders University School of Medicine and School of Informatics and Engineering, and the medical device industry.

The R&D group has extensive mechanical, electronic and programming resources to enable complete development for novel clinical and research medical devices from original conceptualisation and design through to the manufacture of a pre-production prototype.  Specialist areas include: medical electronics, optics, pneumatics, mechanical & surgical instrumentation, toolmaking.

Mechanical Resources

  • Lathes (4) including a watch-makers lathe
  • Milling machines (2) fitted with digital measuring equipment for increased accuracy and productivity
  • Facilties for welding with gas, TIG, and arc, plasma cutting, grit blasting and powder coating
  • Specialist equipment: sheet metal folders, guillotine, belt sanders and power saws
  • Material expertise in perspex, delrin, teflon, PVC, aluminium, brass, mild steel and stainless steel
  • Mechanical design & modelling software packages: Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and CorelDRAW
