Aim: To evaluate commercial pulse oximeter simulators and develop software that overcomes problems inherent in commercial devices.
Research into pulse oximeter simulation has been undertaken by Flinders Biomedical Engineering Group in collaboration with
This work was undertaken towards a Masters in Biomedical Engineering with Flinders University supervisor A/Prof Karen Reynolds.
Given the widespread use of pulse oximeters in a variety of patient areas and clinical environments, simulators provide users with an effective and reassuring tool with which to test the basic functional capabilities of oximeters and probes. Simulators have been developed that employ blood, non-blood products and mechanical techniques. However recently the availability and reliability of optoelectronic and electrical simulators has meant that pulse oximeter's ability to function under various patient scenarios and conditions can also be evaluated.
